WOOD SELECTION

Paint Bleeds

Each of our boards go through a 4 step sanding process.  Our boards are sanded smooth, however all boards will bleed.  Bleeds are not noticeable from a distance at which you’ll be hanging your boards, only up close.  Remember you are your worst critic!  Most bleeds can be touched up when the base was painted (not stained).

Wood Imperfections

Each piece of wood is hand selected and may have perfect imperfections such as knots, nicks, small cracks and holes. We can not help imperfections and knots.  It’s the nature of wood.  We buy common pine and baltic birch to keep your cost low.  Imperfect materials help reduce waste. We could order material made only from the perfect parts of trees, but perfect wood wastes materials and your project cost skyrockets.

Planked or Panel

Our sign substrates come with two options; planked or panel boards.  Planked boards are built like pallets, but use pine boards instead of pallet wood.  We used pallet wood for several years before we decided to switch over to pine.  Pallet wood was becoming incredibly difficult to source, and the work to clean it up was immense.  We have several sizes available in our planked option.  Panel boards are once again constructed of pine, but they are built with fingerjointed glued pieces which are sanded smooth.  There are no real visible divisions in the wood pieces like there are on a planked board.
